The Pratt Research Yard is a collaborative incubator and research facility located on the 7th floor of Building 3 at the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn, New York - offering a space for students, researchers, industry leaders, and the local community to research innovative ideas that bridge art, design, technology, and the humanities.
Consisting of 20,000 square feet of open workspaces, robotics spaces, fabrication labs, offices, and conference rooms, the project transforms the existing derelict space into a research hub by carefully navigating the sensitive historic context and existing infrastructure of the building.
The design for the Research Yard prioritizes daylight, visibility, and ease of circulation for all occupants by strategically placing new architectural volumes away from the existing exterior windows, keeping the perimeter free for informal meeting areas near windows and views. Spaces hosting collective efforts are located in glass enclosed conference rooms, ensuring daylight penetrates throughout the facility.
